Simpson interviewed on Barbara Walters retirement

May 16, 2013

Carole Simpson, senior leader-in-residence in the Journalism Department, was interviewed by CNN and MSNBC about the announcement that legendary journalist Barbara Walters is retiring. Simpson, the first African-American female network evening news anchor, worked with Walters at both ABC and NBC.

“She was the hardest worker of anyone at ABC News,” Simpson told CNN.

In the interview with the Rev. Al Sharpton on MSNBC, Simpson said Walters has “gone a long way” in breaking down racial barriers by having African-American women co-hosting her daytime talk show, The View.

“She will go down in history as the greatest female television journalist ever,” Simpson said. “She should be the greatest television journalist—male or female—ever, because she has done so much.”
