  • Occupy Turkey: Resistance in Baseworld

    4/15/14
    4:15 pm - 6:00 pm
    Max Mutchnick Campus Center
    Multipurpose Room

Join the Institute for Liberal Arts and Emerson Peace & Social Justice as we discuss the recent documentary of Postdoctoral Fellow (Brown University) and Assistant Professor Amy Austin Holmes - Occupy Turkey: Resistance in Baseworld.

Dr. Holmes's research has contributed to the creation of a new field of study that takes the global network of American military bases as its object of analysis. Together with an international film crew, Dr. Holmes recently completed the 67-minute documentary film, Occupy Turkey: Resistance in Baseworld, as a companion piece to her forthcoming book. With over 1,000 military installations on foreign soil, the US has erected what some call an empire of bases. Occupy Turkey: Resistance in Baseworld provides a glimpse into this little-known world by taking a close look at the history of the American presence in Turkey – and the rise of resistance to it.

A synopsis of the film is available for viewing at https://vimeo.com/73884245.

  • Emerson Peace and Social Justice Presents Looking Back and Looking Forward: A Conversation About the Boston Bombing

    4/15/14
    6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
    Walker Building
    210

On the anniversary of the 2013 Boston Marathon Bombing, Emerson Peace and Social Justice invites the Emerson community to come together and discuss thoughts, feelings, questions, and/or concerns about last year's tragedy and this year's upcoming marathon.

We know the tragedy hit the Emerson and Boston community hard, and that many students, faculty, and staff members may be struggling on April 15 and Marathon Monday. We want to provide a safe space to gather as a community, support each other, and heal together.

Members of Emerson Counseling and Psychological Services will be in attendance if anyone needs extra emotional support. Additionally, ECAPS is always available for support, and will be holding walk-in hours on Marathon Monday (April 21).

    Food will be served!

This event is not open to the public.

The Marathon Bombing Tragedy Anniversary is a diverse survey of student work made in response to the Marathon bombing tragedy.

Utilizing a range of creative approaches from personal documentary, narrative treatments, and experimental film and video, these works from Visual and Media Arts Undergraduate and Graduate students present a multidimensional response to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath. Their work is a register of the fears and insecurities that tragic events can catalyze, and a testament to the creative achievements of Emerson visual artists who engage with challenging circumstances in an effort to help us all heal and comprehend, both individually and collectively. Programmed by VMA Assistant Professor Paul Turano.
