Jonathan Goldberg is a Boston-based professional musical director, vocal coach, and accompanist who has been teaching in the Emerson BFA Musical Theatre program since 2004. In addition to classes at Emerson, he is the musical director for the mainstage musicals presented by Emerson Stage, which have included Urinetown, Titanic, James And The Giant Peach, Guys And Dolls, The Spitfire Grill, Merrily We Roll Along, Carousel, Starting Here Starting Now, Two Gentlemen Of Verona, Standardized Testing, Café Variations, She Loves Me, Man Of La Mancha, Nine, Into the Woods, Illyria, Little Women, City of Angels, Bat Boy, and Assassins. Jon is also musical director for the yearly BFA Musical Theatre Showcase, which is presented in Boston at the end of the spring term and in New York during the fall.
Jon also works often at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston, where his productions include Road Show, Sondheim On Sondheim, Sweeney Todd, Working, On The Town, The Mikado, Big River, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Kiss Me, Kate, Grey Gardens, Follies, Man of La Mancha, Adrift in Macao, See What I Wanna See, 1776, Urinetown, A Little Night Music, The Spitfire Grill, Side Show, Sunday in the Park with George, No Way to Treat a Lady, The World Goes 'Round, She Loves Me, and Assassins. He also played keyboards for the Lyric's very successful run of Avenue Q in 2012. His most recent productions at Boston's Wheelock Family Theatre include Billy Elliot, Oliver, The Wizard Of Oz, The Secret Garden (by Jane Staab and Susan Kosoff), Honk, Seussical and Peter Pan.
Jon has also spent many seasons as musical director for Lyric First Stage, an intensive 5-week teen summer program at the Lyric Stage Company. Productions for this program include Me And My Girl, Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Lucky Stiff, As Thousands Cheer, Allegro, Jane Eyre, and Superman, in addition to original song settings and/or arrangements for productions of Much Ado About Nothing, A Midsummer Night's Dream, Twelfth Night, and Two Gentlemen of Verona. Since the summer of 2016, the program was changed to a 3-week Sondheim intensive for high schol students, culminating in a showcase performance.
Jon was the musical director for Forever Plaid at the Stuart Street Playhouse in 2004 and the assistant musical director for Pacific Overtures in 2003 at North Shore Music Theatre. He spent three years as musical director for the Boston company of Nunsense. He has also led the music for a number of productions at Boston's former outdoor Publick Theatre, and worked for 10 years at Boston Children's Theatre as musical director and teacher.
Jon is a four-time IRNE Award winner for his musical direction of Kiss Me, Kate, Grey Gardens, Man of La Mancha, and A Little Night Music (all at the Lyric Stage). Jon is the organist/pianist (and occasionally vocalist) for St. Katherine Drexel church in Roxbury, a position he has held since 1988. He also specializes in vocal arranging, and his original orchestrations have been heard in Wheelock productions of The Secret Garden (Staab/Kosoff), Sara Crewe: A Little Princess (Staab/Kosoff) and Tuck Everlasting (Harold Bakken).
