Eric Schaefer

Dr. Eric Schaefer is a recognized authority on historical aspects of “adults only” cinema. Author of the award-winning Bold! Daring! Shocking! True!: A History of Exploitation Films, 1919-1959 (Duke UP) and editor of Sex Scene: Media and the Sexual Revolution (Duke UP), he has contributed dozens of essays to journals, edited collections, encyclopedias, and has provided commentaries for many DVDs.
Dr. Schaefer delivered keynote addresses at U.S. universities, including UC-Berkeley, NYU, and University of Michigan among others, at institutions in Canada, England, Sweden and Italy, and consulted on a variety of projects.
In addition to many leadership roles at Emerson, where he taught courses in film and media history for almost three decades, he twice served on the Board of Directors of the Society for Cinema and Media Studies, the Board of Advisors of Northeast Historic Film, and is a Collections Advisor to the Kinsey Institute at Indiana University. He currently resides in Portland, Oregon.
