Gary Durham

Gary Durham is a versatile educator, director, and performer with a rich background spanning classical and musical theater. With over 30 years of teaching experience, his former students regularly appear on and off-Broadway, in national and international tours, and at regional theater companies nationwide.

As a stage director, he has helmed more than 50 opera and musical theater productions. A career highlight includes his 2009 production of Vaughan Williams’ Riders to the Sea, which was invited to perform as part of the performing arts series at the New York Public Library at Lincoln Center.

An accomplished singer, his performance experience includes recital, opera, and oratorio performances. He has made appearances with the Handel and Haydn Society, Opera Providence, Opera Boston, the Boston Secession, and the Boston Lyric Opera Chorus, and has sung in Boston’s Symphony Hall, Tanglewood’s Ozawa Hall, the Providence Performing Arts Center and the Pace/McGill Gallery in New York City.

Durham has previously held positions teaching voice, opera, and lyric diction at institutions including Boston University, the University of Connecticut, The Walnut Hill School for the Performing Arts, The Franklin School for the Performing Arts, and the Community Music School at the University of Delaware. Additionally, he spent 12 summers as an instructor at the Boston University Tanglewood Institute.
