Joanne Ciccarello

Joanne Ciccarello is a photojournalist, editor, and educator, committed to the advancement of thoughtful and ethical visual reporting.

Most recently Ciccarello was a photographer/photo editor at the Christian Science Monitor. She has also worked the photo desk at the Providence Journal in Rhode Island. Her photos have been included in juried exhibitions through the National Press Photographers’ Association (NPPA) as well at Griffin Museum.

Through her association with the NPPA women’s committee, Ciccarello teamed up with five other photographers to create Untold Stories: Families Receiving Welfare, which described the lives of seven families enrolled in public assistance. In addition, she coordinated and hosted photojournalism panel presentations for New England Women in Photography, including “Reporting from Ground Zero,” in response to 9/11, and “Women Photojournalists: Bringing the Story Home.” Ciccarello also produced commissioned photo documentaries depicting the positive effects of arts therapies on various populations: “Transformations,” and “Arts in the Healing Process”.

Committed to community engagement and local reporting, Ciccarello’s freelance work has appeared in non-profit communications including brochures and news organs for various universities, government agencies, as well as in news outlets in the Greater Boston area.
