Julia Halperin Headshot

Julia Halperin’s films extend the visual language of genre categories to explore troubled relationships and complex emotional terrain. She is currently distributing Crookedfinger, a supernatural feature film that has gathered more than a dozen awards on the film festival circuit.

Halperin’s previous feature is the psychological suspense film Barracuda, starring Allison Tolman and JoBeth Williams. The film premiered in the Narrative Competition of the 2017 SXSW Film Festival and the Critic’s Week Competition of Cairo International Film Festival. It was developed at the Venice Biennale College-Cinema, IFF Rotterdam’s Cinemart, and the IFP Project Forum, was distributed in the U.S. by Samuel Goldwyn Films/Orion Pictures, and sold across multiple international territories for theatrical, digital and broadcast distribution.

Previously, Halperin produced, co-directed, and edited Now, Forager, which had its World Premiere at International Film Festival Rotterdam and its North American Premiere at New Directors/New Films. It was included in the Museum of Modern Art’s annual best-of-year “Contenders” series, and was nominated for a Breakthrough Director award at the Gotham Awards. She has also created multi-channel gallery-based artworks and has produced and edited many nonfiction media projects.

Halperin’s work has also received support from MacDowell, International Film Festival Rotterdam’s Cinemart, New York Film Festival’s Artist Academy, Yaddo, and the Austin Film Society. She has received glowing reviews from the Hollywood Reporter, Variety, the Los Angeles Times, Austin Chronicle, Filmmaker Magazine, Texas Public Radio, Screen Daily, and Roger Ebert.
