Maria San Filippo

Dr. Maria San Filippo’s teaching and scholarship center on screen media’s intersections with gender and sexuality, focusing on feminist and queer works of contemporary film and television.

She authored the Lambda Literary Award-winning The B Word: Bisexuality in Contemporary Film and Television (2013) and ‘Provocauteurs’ and Provocations: Screening Sex in 21st Century Media (2021), both published by Indiana University Press, and edited the collection After ‘Happily Ever After’: Romantic Comedy in the Post-Romantic Age (Wayne State University Press, 2021). Both Provocauteurs and Provocations and After ‘Happily Ever After’ were shortlisted for 2022 BAFTSS Awards.

Dr. San Filippo received her second Lambda Literary Award for her most recent monograph, a Queer Film Classics volume on Desiree Akhavan’s Appropriate Behavior (2014), published in 2022 by McGill-Queen’s University Press. She is co-editor with Shelley Cobb and Dijana Jelaca of the forthcoming scholarly collection Screening Women Filmmakers, forthcoming in Routledge’s Screening Cinema series.

In 2021-22 she was a U.S. Fulbright scholar at the University of Innsbruck, Austria. From 2020-2023 she was editor-in-chief of the academic quarterly New Review of Film and Television Studies.
