Shujen Wang

Dr. Shujen Wang is professor of media studies in the School of Film, Television and Media Arts. Her extensive research examines global media circulation and piracy, platformization, and global copyright governance. She has also served as a research associate at the Fairbank Center for Chinese Studies at Harvard University since 2002.

Dr. Wang has held multiple administrative and leadership positions at Emerson. As associate dean of the School of the Arts, she spearheaded the establishment of Emerson’s China Program, forging strategic sister-school relationships and student exchange initiatives. She has also served as special assistant to the vice president for Academic Affairs, as well as associate chair and director of Media Studies of the Department of Visual and Media Arts.

She wrote Framing Piracy: Globalization and Film Distribution in Greater China, a pioneering book in film piracy. She contributed chapters to anthologies (Postcolonial Piracy; Unpacking Digital Dynamics; Global Knowledge Cultures; Art, Politics and Commerce in Chinese Cinema; and Bare Acts), and has published in Cinema Journal, International Journal of Cultural Studies, Journal of Digital and Media Policy, Theory Culture & Society, positions: east asia cultures critique, Asian Cinema, Journal of Communication Inquiry, Visual Anthropology, Film Quarterly, Text: Interdisciplinary Journal for the Study of Discourse, Public Culture, Global Media Journal, Asian Journal of Communication, Media Asia, Policy Futures in Education, and Gazette, among others. Her work has been translated into Portuguese and Chinese.

Dr. Wang serves on editorial and advisory boards. She is also a past president of the Chinese Communication Association.
