Tom Kingdon worked for BBC Television for 10 years, where he completed the BBC Director’s Course, adapted two plays for the Royal Shakespeare Company for the small screen, and directed another classical production. He worked for 12 years as a freelance director (mostly in drama) directing some 200 productions.

He joined Emerson in 1994 and remained for 26 years, teaching a variety of courses in television and drama production. His book, <em>Total Directing</em>, was published in 2005. He is currently completing a work for Rutgers University Press, due for publication in 2027.
