Tushar Mathew

Tushar Mathew is an actor-creator, theater-maker and teacher from Kerala, India. His teaching focuses largely on movement, physical embodiment, and our relationship to the environment. He is also deeply interested in how the playing of games acts as a portal towards heightened awareness and intentionality, ensemble building, and storytelling. His teaching and creative practice draws upon his extensive experience in ensemble-based devised theater, and various forms of performance and physical practices from India and around the world.

Mathew is the co-founder of the Otherland Theatre Ensemble, a physical theater devising company that tells stories of underdogs and outcasts who inhabit outrageous worlds and are moved by universal struggles. Their play, Forgive Us, Gustavito!, which won “Best of Fringe” at the Charm City Fringe Festival in Baltimore, continues to tour.

He received a Faculty Advancement Fund Grant from Emerson College (2024-2025), as well as the Nancy Lafrenz Memorial Scholarship for Eli and The Bear (2017). Before moving to Boston in 2022, Mathew taught at both of his alma maters: The Dell’Arte International School of Physical Theatre, and The Drama School, Mumbai.

Currently, Mathew is performing his solo storytelling show, A Good Neighbour, designed to be performed in people’s homes. In collaboration with Associate Professor Nathaniel Justiniano and affiliated faculty member Becca Finney, he is in the process of devising a physical, predominantly non-verbal performance partially inspired by David Livingston Smith’s research on dehumanization. This show is slated to premier in Boston in April 2027.
