Joseph Maggio

Joe Maggio is an award-winning writer-director. His work has screened at MoMA, The Museum of the Moving Image, The Paley Center for Media, and The Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

His first film, Virgil Bliss (2001), was nominated for two 2002 Independent Spirit Awards. Milk + Honey (2003), premiered at the 2003 Sundance Film Festival. Paper Covers Rock (2008), premiered at the SXSW Film Festival and was purchased by IFC Films and Showtime. Bitter Feast (2010) premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival and was released theatrically and on VOD through MPI Media/Dark Sky Films. It was nominated for two Golden Chainsaw Awards by Fangoria Magazine.

The Last Rites of Joe May (2011), was produced in conjunction with Steppenwolf Films of Chicago. It premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, was acquired by Tribeca Films, and released theatrically to critical acclaim throughout North America. The late Roger Ebert included The Last Rites of Joe May on his list of best films of 2011.

Maggio has collaborated with Vincent D’Onofrio on three radio plays — Man on the Ledge (2012); Ram King (2013), and Cannibals (2015) — as part of the Tales from Beyond the Pale series.

His most recent film, Bliss (2024), premiered at Slamdance 2024. In 2025, he completed the radio play The Slaughtered, starring James LeGros and Alex Hurt.

Since 2019, Maggio has toured as the supporting act for British comedian Russell Howard, and in August 2026, he will take his comedic one-man show, The Brush, to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
