James Montgomery-Hyde is the interim vice president and chief human resources officer (CHRO). As CHRO, he manages the institution’s human resources division including compensation and benefits, employee relations, labor relations, compliance, Human Resources Information Systems (HRIS), talent acquisition, and talent development. He is a strategic partner to the president and his leadership team. He is committed to establishing collaborative partnerships across the College to attract, develop, reward, and retain a workforce that is motivated to achieve extraordinary outcomes for our community.

Over the past twenty-five years, Montgomery-Hyde has held human resources leadership roles in government, nonprofits, healthcare, and higher education. Prior to entering the field of human resources, he was a practicing psychotherapist.

Montgomery-Hyde joined Emerson College in 2019 as associate vice president of HR operations. In 2022, he was promoted into the role of CHRO; and in 2025, he was promoted into the role of interim vice president and CHRO.

Beyond his professional work, he is a passionate gardener and animal lover. He currently shares his home with his husband and two cats. He is an active volunteer at the Scituate Animal Shelter in Scituate, MA, and previously served on the board of Walker, Inc., which is a nonprofit organization providing comprehensive programming in the fields of child welfare, children’s behavioral health, and special education.

Montgomery-Hyde holds an MA in counseling psychology and a BA in psychology from Assumption University.
