Announcement

Emerson College today named Dr. Charles Steinberg, President of the Pawtucket Red Sox and longtime Boston Red Sox executive, to lead the College’s new Sports Communication program, which launches in the Fall 2017. He will continue in his current roles in baseball.

Steinberg’s sports communication career has been focused primarily on Major League Baseball, including more than a decade with the Red Sox as executive vice president and senior advisor to the president/CEO, with previous executive positions at the Los Angeles Dodgers, San Diego Padres and the Baltimore Orioles. He has also served as an advisor to the Commissioner of Major League Baseball, is currently an aide to Commissioner Emeritus Allan H. (Bud) Selig, and teaches sports communication classes at Emerson. He was named president of the PawSox (Boston’s Triple A affiliate) on November 5, 2015.

“We are honored that Dr. Steinberg accepted our offer to direct the Sports Communication program. His expertise and dedication to the field, especially as a leader in the Red Sox organization during an exceptional era, make him an incredible asset to the program and to our students,” said Dr. Raul Reis, Dean of the School of Communication and professor in the Department of Communication Studies.

Emerson announced its new Bachelor of Science Degree in Sports Communication last fall. The program will immerse students in sports media and entertainment—one of the top revenue-generating industries in the world with myriad communication career opportunities. One unique aspect of the curriculum will be eSports studies, which prepares students to take part in industries that support major gaming events and infrastructure, including how to run and promote tournaments, organize teams, and understand the emerging business models of eSports.

"It is an honor to help develop the Sports Communication major at Emerson College, already one of the world's foremost institutions in journalism and communication," Steinberg said. "There are vast and growing numbers of students aspiring to enjoy careers in sports communication, and Emerson is already among the leaders who successfully launch students into this emerging global industry."

Steinberg began his career in sports communication as an intern with the Baltimore Orioles and rose through the ranks of that organization, becoming known for his skill in public affairs, community relations, and marketing with the Orioles, Padres, Dodgers, and Red Sox. With all four clubs, Steinberg was responsible for the fan experience in the ballpark and in the community. He has headed the clubs’ public relations and outbound marketing, ballpark entertainment and special events, community relations and advertising, television and video production, and in each case, created innovative fan services departments. Each of the four franchises established attendance records during his tenure.
