Program Overview

This four- week, retreat-style program takes students to the Kasteel Well in the Netherlands. We will take a deep dive into the depths of the voice/body/speech work, finding joy in the subtle precisions of the Linklater voice practice and extreme playfulness through the Roy Hart approach, while playing Shakespeare texts, with the goal of developing a fuller expressive range and deeper relationship with the spoken word and the speaking body. There will be excursions to Amsterdam and London.

Program Eligibility & Admission

  • Open to rising juniors and seniors as well as rising sophomores with special permission.

Course Information

This program is offered for a total of 8 credits. Students will be required to be enrolled by Emerson College in the following courses:

  • TH 421 - Advanced Acting Special Topics: Linklater Voice & Shakespeare I
  • TH 421 - Advanced Acting Special Topics: Linklater Voice & Shakespeare II

Academic Highlights

  • Develop new skills to more fully realize authentic, potent, and expansive range of expression.
  • Introduction and application of techniques to approach, unpack and embody heightened text through applying voice work to Shakespeare monologues.
  • Being taught by the expertise of an Emeritus Teacher designated in Action Theater and specialized in Shakespeare and a Designated Linklater Teacher also specialized in Roy Hart.
  • Get to know some other actors and DLT's based in the UK.

Cultural Highlights

  • Explore the idyllic environs of Well, The Netherlands, along with the bustling and vibrant cities of Amsterdam and London during short excursions
  • Expand your palette by trying traditional Dutch fare.

Program Fee (Undergraduate): $10,500
