Independent. Impartial. Informal. Confidential.
The Ombuds is an independent, impartial, informal, and confidential resource for the Emerson College faculty to share work-related concerns in an off-the-record and safe space. The Ombuds is available to work with faculty to effectively manage, address, surface, and develop options for resolution of college-related issues. The Ombuds supplements, and does not replace, formal administrative channels.
The Ombuds helps visitors navigate relevant resources and policies, provides informal dispute resolution services and coaching on how to raise an issue informally or formally, facilitates difficult discussions, and works with groups in conflict. Additionally, the Ombuds provides anonymized, aggregated data to leadership to help illuminate areas of concern and systemic issues.
Ultimately, the broad scope of the Ombuds in helping faculty members of the Emerson community will open additional opportunities for resolving challenges and improving our academic environment and allow faculty to become better equipped to move forward productively.
The Emerson College Faculty Ombuds adheres to the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics of the International Ombuds Association (IOA).
If you experience any kind of workplace issue and you are not sure what to do or who to talk to, the Ombuds is here for you!
I can help with any workplace issue, including:
- Communication challenges
- Abrasive behavior
- Unethical behavior
- Microaggressions
- Perceived unfair treatment
- Perceived harassment/discrimination
- Challenging group dynamics
- Accusations against you
- Fear of speaking up
- Confusing/concerning processes or procedures
- Any other concern, big or small
Note: While the Ombuds resource is housed within the Office of the Provost, they report directly to the Dean of Faculty and Associate Provost for purposes of administrative and budgetary support, only. Crucially, however, the Ombuds is independent in their work to the extent feasible and lawful and will ensure that College leadership is kept abreast on systematic issues within the institution.
