Maria Elena has done research and published on Philippine constitutional politics and legal culture. She taught sociology and socio-legal courses at the University of Illinois Springfield, Bowdoin College, Rutgers University and other colleges in New York City and Boston. Her research interests has expanded to include gender equity since joining the Simmons University Institute for Inclusive Leadership as its Research Associate. She currently teaches socio-legal studies at Salem State University.
