Purpose

Research is core to the mission of Emerson College. Across academic units, faculty at Emerson are committed to advancing knowledge, to creating change in the world, to investigating complex problems, and to bringing ideas to life in beautiful and creative ways. In addition to our commitment to pedagogical excellence and service to making Emerson a strong and inclusive community, our identity as scholars and creative practitioners is what brings our work to life within and beyond Emerson.

At Emerson, we expand the boundaries of research in higher education. In addition to our commitment to rigorous research across our disciplines, we invest in creative approaches to knowledge creation, artistic interventions in the world, and to explore the application of research in the lived world. In this sense, research at Emerson is a necessarily creative pursuit, and one that reflects the overall creative passion of our academic community.

Through a lengthy review of faculty culture at Emerson in AY 2023-24, we identified a collective need to elevate research and creative practice at Emerson. Faculty express a clear desire to be better connected with colleagues, to build meaningful collaborations, relationships and networks, and to feel a sense of value through their creative work and academic scholarship.

As a result, the Provost’s office, situated in Academic Affairs, established Emerson Research Hub to fulfill its mission to elevate faculty research at Emerson College.

Vision

Emerson believes that a stronger culture for faculty research will lead to stronger classrooms, to stronger connections across the college, to a sense of fulfillment as educators, creators, and researchers, and to a culture of care for our college, our community, and each other.

Mission

The Emerson Research Hub will:

  • Prioritize community, care, and collaboration through building and supporting stronger infrastructures for research;
  • Elevate dynamic work across campuses and academic community;
  • Synergize resources among  the existing centers, institutes, and labs across campus;
  • Share information, foster collaboration, and address issues that faculty face in their research and creative practice; and
  • Support Emerson’s mission of excellence in higher education
