Undergraduate Students

  • Undergraduate students must have a cumulative GPA of 2.7 or higher to take more than 16 credits during a semester.
  • Undergraduate students taking more than 16 credits in a semester are billed for the additional credits on a per-credit basis.
  • Undergraduate students enrolled in the Global BFA in Film Art (GBFA) who are attending classes at the Paris College of Art may not take more than 19 credits. GBFA students do not have a GPA requirement to take more than 16 credits and are billed at the per-credit undergraduate rate.
  • Undergraduate students may not take more than 20 credits a semester.
  • Undergraduate students taking classes at Emerson Los Angeles (ELA) may not take more than 17 credits during the ELA semester, regardless of cumulative GPA.
  • First-semester undergraduates, both freshmen and transfers, may not overload, with the exception of voice, dance, and non-tuition courses.
  • During the fall and spring semesters, continuing undergraduate students may not overload until after the initial registration week.
  • During the summer semester, undergraduate students with a GPA of 2.7 or higher wishing to take more than 16 credits must request to do so in writing by emailing registrar [at] emerson.edu (registrar[at]emerson[dot]edu).
  • Students taking more than 16 credits in a summer semester may not take more than 12 credits concurrently.

Graduate Students

  • Graduate students wishing to take more than 12 credits must submit a General Petition to Graduate Studies.
