The Robbins Speech, Language and Hearing Center is dedicated to assisting individuals to express themselves more authentically. Communication style can be a major component of personal identity. Our clinicians help people who feel their voice and communication are not in alignment with their sense of self. Scientific evidence proves that making changes in areas such as resonance, pitch, loudness, intonation (melody) gestures, body language and word choice can help a person feel that their voice is better aligned with their identity and that they have more confidence in social situations.
Consultation
During the initial visit the client will discuss their communication needs. The client is encouraged to talk about all aspects of their communication and given help to identify the areas that can be effectively addressed in future sessions. The clinician and client then work together to develop a personalized plan. This consultation session includes an interview, assessment, and preliminary feedback immediately following the evaluation. All aspects of communication will be examined with special attention on resonance, pitch, intonation, stress, and vocal quality. Instruments such as pitch analyzers will be used as needed. If there is any concern for a voice disorder due to a physiologic problem, a referral will be made to a medical specialist. A follow-up written report will be provided to document results and recommendations.
Individual Sessions
During individual sessions, clients will address the voice and communication areas they have identified during the consultation. Support is provided to help clients to not only use their new communication style in the session but also in all settings such as school, home, or work. Home practice programs are also utilized to maximum generalization.
Small and Larger Group Sessions
Communication training, education, and practice in a supportive small-group setting to help individuals find their authentic voice. These groups are tailored to the needs of the individuals and are mostly conversation-focused. This helps clients grow confidence in using their new communication style and to make it part of a daily habit. Some of the groups offered have included using drama-based techniques or helping client’s singing voice better reflect their identity. Other groups are highly immersive and offer individual and group sessions for 4-5 hours over 2-3 days. Clinicians will recommend the groups that will best meet the needs of each individual client.
Modality
Services are offered both in-person and via telepractice.
