Dr. Kate Eichhorn is Dean of the School of the Arts and Professor of Visual and Media Arts. She leads Emerson's largest division, which offers twenty undergraduate and graduate programs cutting across the fields of creative writing, publishing, literature, acting, theatre education, comedy, filmmaking, media studies, and media arts production.
Kate is also an established researcher and writer. Working at the intersection of cultural studies, media studies, and feminist theory, she is the author of six published and forthcoming non-fiction books, including most recently, The End of Forgetting (Harvard University Press, 2019) and Content (The MIT Press, 2022). Her writing on technology, youth cultures, and education can also be found in publications such as the MIT Technology Review, Wired, Literary Hub, and The Chronicle of Higher Education. In addition, she has authored and edited several literary collections.
Prior to joining Emerson in July 2024, Kate spent sixteen years leading departments and schools at The New School in New York City, where she also held the title of Professor of Culture and Media Studies. She started her career at Toronto Metropolitan University, where she taught on campus in the Arts & Contemporary Studies Program and Graduate Program in Communication & Culture and off campus in the Public Administration and Indigenous Governance Program.
Kate holds a BA in English and Women's Studies from Trent University, an MA in Education from Simon Fraser University, and a PhD in Language, Culture, and Teaching from York University.
