Theatre Education & Applied Theatre (MA/MFA)

Set the stage for your career.

Build your career in theatre and education with Emerson’s Theatre Education & Applied Theatre programs. Expand your knowledge of theatre, teaching, and the practices of applied drama.

We offer three degree options to allow you to pursue your professional goals:

  • Master of Arts in Theatre Education & Applied Theatre
  • Master of Arts in Theatre Education: Licensure
  • Masters of Fine Arts in Theatre Education & Applied Theatre

The Theatre Education & Applied Theatre MA and MFA programs allow you to focus on Theatre Education, Applied Theatre, or a combination of the two, preparing you for careers in community settings, private schools, or higher education. The MA program is best for professionals beginning their careers, while the MFA is built to support teaching artists with experience in the field and their creative vision.

The Theatre Education: Licensure MA focuses on teaching theatre in  PK-12 settings and provides you with initial Massachusetts licensure, setting you up for a career in public education.

Prepare to teach the next generation of actors, use theater to engage and support communities, take on leadership roles at professional theatres or community-based arts organizations, or use theatre to promote community-based social justice. Located in the heart of Boston’s Theatre District, you’ll be inspired at every turn.
