Theatre for Young Audiences
Each year, Emerson Stage presents one production dedicated as Theatre for Young Audiences (TYA) or Theatre for Intergenerational Audiences. For our students, this production is a unique opportunity to work on theatrical pieces designed for young people and people of various ages. For our communities, it is an opportunity for an engaging, educational, and enjoyable field trip.
Emerson Stage reserves two performances of each TYA production specifically for school groups. These performances occur at 10:00 am on school days, and are filled with students visiting Emerson College with their classmates. In addition to the performance, our Education Directors and Engagement Teams—who are usually students in the Theatre Education and Performance degree programs—provide supplemental educational items, including a production study guide sent to the teachers before the performance date, post-show discussions with members of our cast and crew, and other activities and opportunities.
This year’s Theatre for Young Audiences production will be The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Dwayne Hartford, from the book by Kate DiCamillo. This is geared for elementary school students, especially for students in grades 3-4. Emerson Stage will present two school matinee performances and three additional public performances over November 6-9, 2024.
