MFA and Licensure Update

While we have historically offered a program in teaching licensure for theatre educators as well as an MFA program in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre, we have paused our admissions for those programs in 2026.

The Department of Performing Arts in Emerson College’s School of Arts and Interdisciplinary Studies offers two on-campus graduate programs in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre. The Master of Arts (MA) in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre and Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre each offer students different benefits depending on their professional and educational goals. Our specialized training emphasizes the creation of inclusive, empowering, and enjoyable learning environments in schools and communities.

Master’s Programs in the Department of Performing Arts

Master of Arts in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre

The MA in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre is designed for students who want to work at the intersection of theatre, education, and community engagement. Many of our graduates have gone on to become private school theatre teachers, teaching artists, community-based educators, directors, and playwrights, while others have gone on to pursue MFAs and doctoral degrees.

Master of Fine Arts in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre

Completion of the on-campus MFA in Theatre Education and Applied Theatre program opens the door to leadership positions in professional theatres and community-based arts organizations and teaching full-time in colleges and universities for those interested in a career in higher education. There are some opportunities to work as teaching assistants in undergraduate courses during the MFA program, offering valuable experience and resumé credentials that facilitate a successful transition into teaching theatre courses in post-secondary education.
