All undergraduate students are encouraged to connect with faculty mentors within their academic departments to explore academic interests, career pathways, and industry-specific opportunities. Faculty mentorship complements professional advising by offering discipline-specific insight and guidance that supports students’ academic and professional growth. The mentorship process is facilitated and supported within each academic department.

Performing Arts students are assigned a faculty mentor within their major, Honors students are advised by the Honors Program Director, and Interdisciplinary Studies students are mentored by the Director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Major. These students also maintain a professional advisor in the Academic Advising Center (AAC) for additional support with academic planning, policies, and procedures.

Together, the collaboration between professional advisors and faculty mentors ensures a well-rounded, integrated advising experience that supports students from exploration through degree completion.

Faculty Mentors

Faculty mentors support students’ academic and professional development by helping them:

  • Explore academic interests, creative pursuits, and career goals
  • Understand major requirements and disciplinary opportunities
  • Select courses that support preparation for internships, graduate study, or industry work
  • Connect with professional networks and organizations
  • Prepare for internships, careers, or graduate school pathways
  • Identify research, creative, and scholarly opportunities
  • Access referrals to appropriate campus resources

Additional mentorship resources are available at Emerson’s Teaching Hub.

While professional advisors and faculty mentors provide academic guidance, students are ultimately responsible for understanding degree requirements, selecting courses, making informed academic decisions, and using institutional resources—including the course catalog and degree audit—to support their academic success.
