First-Generation Pre-Orientation Frequently Asked Questions
What is First-Generation Pre-Orientation?
First-Generation Pre-Orientation is a program designed to help incoming first-generation college students get a head start on their Emerson experience. Participants arrive on campus early to meet other first-gen students, connect with mentors, explore campus resources, and begin building a strong foundation for college success.
Who is considered a first-generation student?
A first-generation college student is typically defined as someone whose parent(s) or guardian(s) did not complete a four-year college degree. At Emerson, we recognize that this definition doesn’t capture every student’s experience. If you feel you’re navigating college without family guidance or a roadmap for applying, attending, and succeeding, you belong in our first-gen community, and we’re here to support you.
Why should I participate?

Most importantly, you’ll develop the tools to advocate for yourself and begin your Emerson journey with a strong sense of belonging, purpose, and confidence.
