Department of Journalism

Learn about the department’s academic programs, faculty, and news

Although technology continues to evolve in new ways for us to share and consume news and information, the principles and values that govern journalism remain strong. Emerson College’s Department of Journalism teaches students how to tell impactful stories that increase public understanding and audience engagement, and prepares them to adapt to—and shape—this rapidly changing field.

About the Department

Housed in the School of Communication, the Department of Journalism offers an undergraduate program in Journalism and an online graduate program in Journalism and Media Innovation. These programs train ethical journalists who write compelling, original news stories and documentaries—and bring those stories to life through multimedia platforms as well as broadcast, print, streaming channels, and the web.

Students will gain rich experiences in the field covering major stories in Boston; doing internships at major media organizations; and participating in extracurricular activities that range from conducting in-depth interviews and attending State House press conferences to providing multimedia coverage of the Oscars, the Super Bowl, and political elections. Students will also have access to Emerson’s Journalism television and multimedia facility, a state-of-the-art center for hands-on instruction and network-grade news production.

Our dedicated Journalism faculty is composed of experienced professionals from news outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, Boston Globe, CNN, CBS, NBC, Telemundo, and the Washington Post, as well as experts from global media organizations and civic media entities. They guide our students—and challenge them—throughout their time at Emerson.
