Emergency Notifications

Emerson College uses multiple systems to alert community members to an emergency. Alerts are sent for incidents that present a threat to the safety and well-being of the Emerson community. Emergency alert systems at Emerson College include:

  • Fire Alarms
  • Emerson Alert is the College’s Emergency Notification System (ENS). This state-of-the-art system enables the College to communicate with students, faculty, and staff in the event of an emergency. It simultaneously transmits messages via telephone, email, text messaging (SMS), social media, and the Emerson Alert speaker system on the Boston campus. Please be sure to update your contact information for Emerson Alert. We recommend that you add at least one mobile phone number to the system, as this is the fastest way to receive alert messages.
  • Emerson Alert Speaker System. This system enhances the College's ability to reach community members during Emerson Alert emergency notifications. When activated, the speakers will deliver an initial tone followed by a broadcast of the Emerson Alert message. Emerson Alert Speakers are located on the Boston campus in classrooms and computer labs.
  • Community advisory emails
  • The College’s emergency site: emerson.edu/emergency

  • Emerson Alert. Emerson utilizes a state-of-the-art emergency notification system called Emerson Alert to send emergency messages to students, faculty, and staff in the event of an emergency or school closure. When activated, this program simultaneously sends messages to individuals by telephone (both landline and cellular), text (SMS), and email. You may be added to your student's alert account, but they must sign you up. Ask your student to do so. We strongly recommend that students add at least one mobile phone number to the system, as this is the fastest way to receive alert messages.

  • Make a plan. We encourage parents to find some time to talk to their students about what to do in the event of an emergency while at Emerson College. Plan in advance how your student will contact you, options for meeting, and what you will do in different situations.

Communications Plan

  • Staying in contact with family members is critical during an emergency. Develop a plan on how you will communicate with each other.
  • Create a list of important family contacts and share the list with your student.
  • Identify an out-of-state family contact to receive and relay messages for situations when it’s not possible to make contact with family members who are nearby.
  • Notify family members if you are affected by an emergency so they know where you are. If you can’t reach them, notify your out-of-state family contact.
  • Consider adding “In Case of Emergency” (ICE) to your student’s cell phone with the number of the person to be contacted in the event of an emergency. Medical professionals often look for ICE contacts in patient cell phones to assist in contacting family members when it’s most needed.
