The School of Film, Television, and Media Arts is committed to making media production more accessible.

Media production is a collaborative medium, by fostering a community of informed and proactive creators you can contribute to a more inclusive future of media. Accessibility in media production is an ongoing commitment that requires continuous education and advocacy.

Universal Design is defined by The Center for Universal Design at North Carolina State University as "the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design."

At Emerson, production team members present from development should consider accessibility and diversity across content, locations, and technical aspects of the project.

Students are not responsible for enforcing removal of barriers and are not to work individually with student accommodations. Productions should consult with Student Accessibility Services to review accessibility considerations as well as to determine best supports.

Emerson’s Student Accessibility Services (SAS) strives to create an inclusive campus environment for students, allowing them to have full access to courses, programs, and activities during their time at Emerson College. SAS coordinates accommodations and support services that promote equal access for undergraduate and graduate students with disabilities. Accommodations not only apply to classes but to all involvement of Emerson affiliated activities, from media projects to student organization productions. Leaders on the student production should consider Universal Design throughout and inform all team members to request any accommodations through SAS by referring to the accommodations process guidelines.

Accommodations for media projects should be discussed for each experience, as productions and student’s needs/responsibilities may vary.

Students requiring accommodations are responsible for

  1. Requesting accommodations,
  2. Completing all steps of the SAS process,
  3. Letting SAS know if any approved accommodations aren’t being met.

Emerson School of Film, Television, and Media Arts students are encouraged to learn more about Universal Design by exploring the Universal Design Toolkit, available through the School of Film, Television, and Media Arts Production Safety Canvas course.

Students are encouraged to connect with relevant School of Film, Television, and Media Arts staff for additional needs in relation to that accommodation. For accommodations, please contact Student Accessibility Services.
