Elma Lewis Center

Named for Elma Lewis ’43, the center focuses on intergenerational story work and youth workshops with campus and neighborhood communities through self-representation, across media formats. It is located at 148 Boylston Street.

Emeritus/a/i/ae

These are honorary designations and do not mean “retired.” Lowercase when used as a general description or after a person’s name and capitalize when it precedes a person’s name.

Emeritus is used for a single male. Emerita is used for a single female. Use emeriti when referring to a group of men or a mixed gender group. Use emeritae when referring to a group of women.

  • Professor Emerita Shirley Moskowitz gave a guest lecture yesterday.
  • The College granted three professors emeriti status at the ceremony.

Emerson College

The College was founded in 1880 by Charles Wesley Emerson. Emerson has about 686 full- and part-time faculty, and about 4,145 undergraduate and about 1,491 graduate students. The current president is Dr. Jay M. Bernhardt. He is the 13th president. The College’s motto is “Expression Necessary to Evolution.” Its slogan is “Bringing Innovation to Communication and the Arts.”

Emerson College Los Angeles

The College’s permanent home in LA opened in January 2014. The facility’s formal name is Emerson College Los Angeles; it can be referred to informally as Emerson Los Angeles (ELA).
The physical building can also be referred to informally as the center (lowercase c). Its address is 5960 West Sunset Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 90028. The Los Angeles Program, through which approximately 200 seniors (and some juniors) take courses while completing an industry internship, is housed within the building. The academic program began in 1986.
There are approximately 4,500 alumni in the LA area.

Emerson Stage

Engagement Lab

The Engagement Lab at Emerson College was a research and design lab focused on the intersection of media and civic engagement.

EVVY Awards

Note the capital letters. The term EVVYs is also acceptable. It is an annual event that highlights student work.
