“Roles” are special-assignment administrative positions held by faculty as part of shared governance. Faculty are appointed and evaluated by the appropriate academic leader of their unit, with approval from the Provost. Role holders maintain their faculty status during their time in the role.

As academic programs and structures change, roles may also change, with some being eliminated and new roles being added. Existing roles may also undergo changes, their tasks diminishing or expanding due to program and structural shifts. When changes need to be made to the roles document (creation, elimination, or alteration), faculty holding those roles or the academic unit leader overseeing those roles should bring those suggested changes to the attention of their dean (or, if applicable, the Provost). If the dean concurs with the change, they will send it to the Provost, who will consult with the other deans. This ensures that any changes are vetted by leaders from across the college who manage other, comparable roles.

Discussions on changes by the deans will be informed by the following criteria, as the rationale for change should address these in relation to other roles of the same category at the institution: scale (number of students, tasks, etc.); complexity (e.g. discipline specific needs); and unique additional tasks. Changes to tasks and roles will be updated at the end of every academic year, unless immediately necessary.  All suggested changes and their rationale are due by March 1 for implementation the subsequent academic year.
