Lists

There are a few different ways to format a list. If items in a list are short phrases, list within text. Or it might make more sense designwise to set it vertically. This is also the preferred style for the web.

Your application must include the following:

  • a resume
  • three letters of recommendation
  • school transcripts

No punctuation is needed after these list items because they do not individually form a complete sentence.

When items in a list are several long phrases, it is a good idea to set them vertically. If the phrases complete a sentence begun with the introductory element, use semicolons after the phrases. Insert a period at the end of the last phrase.

To apply for the program, students must:

  1. Fill out the application form online;
  2. Have recommenders send letters to the department chair; and
  3. Have their GRE scores sent from the testing site.

If one item in a list is a complete sentence, then all list items must take a period.

  1. Fill out the release form.
  2. Commit to volunteering five hours a month.
  3. Minors must have their parents sign a permission form.

Use parentheses to enclose numbers or letters that mark a list in running text.

  • Submit (1) a completed health form, (2) an immunization form signed by your doctor, and (3) a completed visa form.
